Bee bread is perhaps the most valuable product of the hive, but also the less known. Not many people know what bee bread is and even less dare to collect it. To give a short definition, bee bread is a sort of modified pollen, and a source of food for the hardworking bees.

Under the influence of the substances added by bees, of the microorganisms, of temperature and high humidity from the hive, and because of the way pollen is preserved, it undergoes a lot of biochemical transformations and structural changes, turning them into bee bread.

Composition and characteristics:
Bee bread is a natural product which has more valuable characteristics than pollen because of its bigger content of simple sugars, vitamin K, enzymes and amino acids as well as of its higher acidity, thus being more easily assimilated. Compared to pollen, bee bread is three times more nutritive and antibiotic. Also the external cover of pollen, exine, is destroyed, causing an easier assimilation by the body. Because of the big quantity of lactic acid and of its antibiotic properties, bee bread may be preserved for a long period of time without noticing any evident changes as far as its quality and quantity are concerned. If it is kept in a dry and cold place, it may resist up to 17 years.

The chemical composition of bee bread is the following:
- Carbohydrates (glucides) -- 35%;
- Lipids -- 1-6%;
- caretonids(provitamin A)-200-875 mg/kg;
- vitamin E -- 1,7 g /kg;
- vitamin C -- 6-200 mg /100g produs.

Recommendation:
Bee bread covers the entire scale of recommendations specific to pollen: hepatic diseases, anemia, stress, rheumatism, adjustment of the intestinal transit, colon diseases, especially those related to constipations (enterocolitis, colitis caused by fermentation or putrefaction of undigested food, chronic constipations of different etiologies) but its action is stronger and more rapid.

Be careful: As it happens with pollen and honey, bee bread cannot be used by diabetics.
